Pebble Beach is not a place you simply drive into. 17-Mile Drive is gated at every entrance, and what happens at that gate depends on where you are staying and what is running that week.
For a resident guest the gate is a formality. For a visitor arriving to dine, to play or for an event, it is not — and that difference is worth knowing before you are sitting at it. We handle the arrival details in advance, so the car is expected rather than explained.
Inside, the distances are short and the parking is the problem. A car held for the day is usually less trouble than moving one four times, particularly in the evening when the resort forecourts fill.
Inside the gates
Everything here is within a few minutes of everything else, which is exactly why the waiting matters more than the driving.
The forecourt is small and runs on a rhythm. Arrivals are timed rather than stacked, and the car waits away from the door until you are ready instead of occupying it.
Both sit a few minutes from The Lodge, and neither is signposted the way a hotel usually is. A chauffeur who has been there before does not need talking in.
Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay are minutes apart. Clubs stay in the car between rounds, which is the whole reason to hold one rather than book three.
Dinner inside the gates and dinner in Carmel are ten minutes apart and completely different journeys. The car is on the clock for either, and for the one that turns into the other.
